This adorable 1970 Rare Vintage 16" Tamu doll, by Shindana Toys, is in good condition, but does have a few issues. Her body seems to be off center, which may be caused by the voice box inside her torso, of which there is no pull string. The doll also has a few tiny tears on her feet, as well as a rip in her right arm, which revealed stuffing. (I taped it)
This doll is quite special, as she was created to inspire, embower and provide positive representation for black children. The Shindana Toy Factory was the largest manufacturer of Black dolls and toys and was credited as the first company to mass-produce "ethnically correct" black dolls. Tamu means sweet in Swahili.
Her talking mechanism, when the string was pulled said " I'm cool like you", "cool it baby", "Can you dig it", "My name is Tamu" and "Tell me a story"
The doll is 16" and comes from a smoke free home
